Summer is here once again, which means that many of us are looking for what to do and how to take the most advantage of this laid back season. This is the perfect time to go explore around Florida and discover places you’ve never been, or heard about, before. When summer rolls around, Florida transforms into a playground teeming with sun-soaked adventures and breathtaking scenery. As someone who has spent their fair share of summers exploring the Sunshine State, I've discovered that there's truly something for everyone here. From the sugar-white beaches of Destin to the vibrant coral reefs in Key Largo, Florida offers countless opportunities to make your summer vacation memorable.

Whether you're a thrill-seeker or prefer relaxing by crystal-clear springs, you'll find activities that suit your taste here in Florida. Imagine snorkeling through the colorful underwater world at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, or feeling the cool rush of spring water as you dive into Ginnie Springs, it is simply a dream-come-true Summer. Florida's diverse landscapes and attractions cater to both adrenaline junkies and those looking to unwind.

One of my favorite summer spots is the Emerald Coast, stretching over 100 miles and including gems like Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island. If escaping the tourist crowds sounds appealing, this region's emerald green waters and less-known beaches offer a serene retreat, and arguably the prettiest beaches in the state.

I absolutely love the variety of beaches that Florida offers. Clearwater Beach is known for its soft white sands and vibrant atmosphere. The sunsets here are a must-see. On Sanibel Island, shelling is a popular activity due to the abundance of unique shells scattered along the shore, and also keep an eye out for shark teeth. Naples boasts upscale beaches with tranquil settings perfect for those looking to unwind. For those interested in exploring marine life, Dry Tortugas National Park in the Gulf of Mexico provides pristine waters and rich biodiversity.

Engage in Water Sports Activities

Florida's coastline is a playground for water sports enthusiasts. In Key West, I found kayaking through the mangroves an unforgettable experience. The blue waters and soaking in the early morning or afternoon sun is truly magical. Paddle boarding in the calm waters of the Emerald Coast is both challenging and rewarding, even though I can only do it on my knees! The bioluminescent organisms in the waters of Titusville offer a unique nighttime kayaking experience, this is my number one in my Florida bucket list and I hope to do it this year. Fishing trips are also popular, with the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean providing ample opportunities. Parasailing in spots like Destin offers a bird’s-eye view of the stunning coastline and a thrilling experience.

For snorkeling and diving adventures, Sanibel Island and Dry Tortugas National Park stand out. The reefs around Key West are teeming with marine life, making it a dream spot for snorkelers. Diving enthusiasts should head to the barrier islands and explore shipwrecks and coral reefs, it is truly fascinating. I've found that the waters here are some of the clearest, offering excellent visibility and a chance to see everything from colorful corals to curious sea turtles.

I can't talk about Florida without mentioning Orlando's theme parks, this section is definitely for the ones that don’t mind the tourists and crowds. If you want to visit the parks in a less busy season try during the Fall or early Spring. Walt Disney World tops the list, with its iconic Magic Kingdom leading the way. Going to any of their parks is magical for the family, children, and your inner child. Here, visitors can experience classic attractions like Cinderella's Castle and the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Another must-visit is Universal Orlando Resort, home to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This park offers incredible rides and detailed recreations of scenes from the beloved series. Additionally, LEGOLAND Florida Resort offers a unique, family-friendly experience with its wide array of themed rides and attractions designed for younger children.

For those looking to cool off, Aquatica Water Park provides an excellent escape from the summer heat with its exhilarating water slides and lazy rivers. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie or looking to relive your childhood memories, Orlando's theme parks have it all.

After a day of excitement, Florida's family-friendly resorts offer the perfect places to unwind. Disney's All-Star Resorts are an affordable and convenient option for families visiting Walt Disney World. These resorts feature fun, themed decor and easy access to the parks via complimentary transportation. For a more luxurious experience, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa provides elegant accommodations and top-notch amenities, including fine dining and a full-service spa.

You have to go to the Everglades if you want to experience natural Florida, especially if you want to see alligators. This vast region is a must-visit for any nature lover. Known for its unique ecosystem, the Everglades is home to diverse wildlife, including alligators, manatees, and a variety of bird species.

I recommend taking one of the airboat tours for close encounters with these incredible creatures. For a more intimate experience, try kayaking through the mangrove forests. Many visitors also enjoy guided tours that provide deeper insights into the region's ecology and conservation efforts.

Camping in the Everglades offers a way to truly immerse yourself in this natural setting. With numerous hiking trails available, you can explore the park at your own pace. Make sure to equip yourself with appropriate gear to stay comfortable and safe during your adventures.

Central Florida is famous for its crystalline freshwater springs. Ginnie Springs and Ichetucknee Springs are two notable spots perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and tubing. These springs provide a refreshing escape from the summer heat. Going to the springs is one of my favorite things to do in Florida because it is a fun way to stay fresh during the hottest months of the year and they are also absolutely stunning.

Ginnie Springs offers some of the clearest waters, ideal for diving and underwater photography. The abundant aquatic life makes it a fantastic location for beginner and experienced divers alike. Ichetucknee Springs, on the other hand, is popular for its scenic tubing routes that meander through lush, green landscapes.

During your visit, consider exploring the surrounding hiking trails. These paths often lead to stunning views and quiet spots perfect for a picnic or to meditate. The experience of swimming in these natural pools is unique, making it a highlight of any Florida summer vacation.

There are countless ways to engage with Florida's rich cultural and historical tapestry. Travelers can experience the Sunshine State's vibrant past and present by visiting iconic landmarks, engaging museums, and other significant sites.

Visit Historical Landmarks and Museums

St. Augustine, known as America’s oldest city, is a must-visit. Walking through this city, I felt immersed in history, particularly at the Castillo de San Marcos, an ancient fortress brimming with stories of bygone eras and colonial conflicts. This city reminds me more of an European town, it is like escaping the regular Florida vibe.

Another gem is the Ringling Museum located in Southwest Florida, in Sarasota. Beyond its stunning collection of art, it provides fascinating insights into the history of circus life, thanks to John Ringling’s legacy.

For space enthusiasts, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Titusville offers an extraordinary look into NASA’s achievements. I found the exhibits on past space missions to be incredibly inspiring and educational.

A trip to the Lightner Museum in St. Augustine and exploration of the art, artifacts, and stunning architecture truly underscores the city’s historical essence.

Those who love museums shouldn’t miss the sampling of art in Miami, including the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), which showcases contemporary and modern international works.
