Summer in SWFL: 4 Things to Do
It is summer in Southwest Florida and we know that means it is the “slow” season. There are not many events going on and even some businesses close down for the season. So, what do locals do when the beaches are too crowded and it is way too hot and humid to be just out and about? Here are four ideas that are out of the ordinary and a great way to keep yourself and the whole family entertained.
The Mound House - Fort Myers Beach
Set in the oldest house in Fort Myers Beach and built on top of a 2,000 year old Calusa shell mound, this beautiful natural history museum resides. The whole property is absolutely stunning, a great place for a summer early afternoon.
There are six exhibits, including an underground one, where you can see the layers of shell used by the natives to build. It is such a fun experience where you get to learn more about the cultural and environmental history of Southwest Florida. The museum also offers stunning eco-kayak tours that explore the beauty of Estero Bay and its wildlife.
Fort Rock Climbing Center - Fort Myers
This indoor rock climbing facility in Fort Myers has 56 different routes to climb, in different levels of difficulty. They also have a space for weight lifting in the gym. There is the option to get a monthly membership, a day pass, or a 10-visit punch card. It is fun for the whole family. Because it is indoors, you don’t have to deal with the Florida heat for at least a couple of hours. The facility allows you to have parties there, a great option for active kids. It is lots of fun and a great way to get active this summer!
Sanibel Candle Co - Fort Myers
Make your own candle at Bell Towers this summer with Sanibel Candle Co. The store relocated to Fort Myers after Hurricane Ian destroyed their Sanibel island location. This is probably one of my favorite things to do in Southwest Florida because it is so much fun to pick your scents, mix them up, and create your own signature fragrance. I’ve created two so far, one for Sofia and one for Love SWFL.
It is perfect for a day out with friends, a date night, or going as a family. To make the experience even more fun, you can make it a competition and see who makes the most scrumptious candle!
Golisano Children’s Museum - Naples
This is the perfect spot to let your kids get their energy out while they are learning. The museum has two floors of didactic exhibitions and a play zone outdoors as well. It is such a fun museum because it has everything from STEM to Florida wildlife information. It also has a great area for little ones to play where they are constantly cleaning the toys, to keep the germs at bay. The museum offers day passes, memberships, and an accessibility discount for WIC & EBT cardholders.
