Hurricane Season 2023: Getting Ready
Hurricane Ian left a lot of devastation, but also left a lot of teachings, like getting ready for the season in time. Being prepared for the season can potentially save your life and those of your loved ones. Wether you are a local or a newcomer, this will help you understand some of the basics of what you will need for the 2023 hurricane season.
Hurricane season officially starts on June 1st and ends on November 30th. This year, according to the WINK Hurricane Guide, predictions show a slightly below active season. Keep in mind that we can still be hit by a storm, so that doesn’t make it any less important to be ready.
2023 storm names: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harold, Idalia, Jose, Katia, Lee, Margot, Nigel, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vine, and Whitney.
Hurricane preparedness tips
Develop an evacuation plan
The first thing to do is to create and evacuation plan and to make sure that everyone in your family knows it.
Know your evacuation zone: Research your flood and evacuation zone. Check here for the United States, here for Lee, and here for Collier.
Choose a safe location to evacuate to: Make plans of where you would go in case they order evacuations in your area. That could be a shelter, a friend or family house, or to a hotel more inland. You don’t have to plan to go super far away, just make sure you have where to go. Also very important is to make sure that if you have pets, they are part of this plan and make sure in advance you can take them with you.
Keep all important documents together: In case of having to evacuate, make sure you have important documents together. This includes, but are not limited to: Passports, birth certificates, insurance paperwork, and medications or prescriptions.
Gather disaster supplies
These are all things you want to get now, before shelves are empty and stores are packed. You’ll need batteries, a first aid kit, lantern, portable charger power bank, emergency radio, a gallon of water per person per day, nonperishable food items, cleaning supplies, and propane.

Prepare your home for a storm
Do everything now that you will not be able to do during a storm. This includes: Trim trees, check that your shutters work and if you have accordion shutters that you know where the key is, and buy any plywood or aluminum in case you need to board up your home.
